Why Image Making and Trauma?

Through the process of exploring and expressing with art making, people might find relief from overwhelming events

(Malchiodi, 1998).

Image making as modality in the counselling relationship is a suitable approach for coming to terms with trauma and difficult life experiences as images created in therapy contains intricacies, nuances and ambiguities that at times can be too difficult and unbearable to articulate verbally.
(Case & Dalley 1992)

Sometimes it is difficult or even impossible to speak about a distressing event or we simply cannot find any words for our behaviour and feelings. Image making in a counselling relationship offers the client with an appropriate route to engage with the presenting difficulties in a less threatening and creative way.
